Deborah Sampson – Revolutionary War Hero

Deborah Sampson, the only woman to earn a full military pension for participation in the Revolutionary War visited Samuel Bryan Chapter’s first meeting of 2023 to tell her fascinating story! She told us about a desire to serve so strong that she disguised herself as a man named Robert Shurtleff so she could join the Patriots. She was wounded in battle- and then tended her own wounds, including removing a musket ball from her hip by herself- so that her identity and her choice to serve could remain her own. She told us of receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, and another, more questionable discharge from the Baptists. 🙂 We so enjoyed her visit and would surely welcome her back anytime. Many thanks to Deborah Sampson for her service. DAR’s Samuel Bryan Chapter Recognizes Good Citizens

Beech Grove, Indiana – The Samuel Bryan Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) have the pleasure of recognizing the winner of our chapter Good Citizen Award.  

The DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the sparkling qualities of good citizenship in our students. The program is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited and in good standing with their state board of education. Students are not required to be United States citizens.
DAR’s Samuel Bryan Chapter and Hornet Park Community Center Recognizes Local Veterans

The Samuel Bryan Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, along with Hornet Park Community Center in Beech Grove held its third annual Veterans Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday afternoon. This free luncheon for all local veterans began at 11am with Chapter Regent Patricia Moy welcoming all in attendance, reminding them that this event was to celebrate their courage, sacrifices, and to sincerely thank them for their service.
