Deborah Sampson – Revolutionary War Hero

Deborah Sampson, the only woman to earn a full military pension for participation in the Revolutionary War visited Samuel Bryan Chapter’s first meeting of 2023 to tell her fascinating story! She told us about a desire to serve so strong that she disguised herself as a man named Robert Shurtleff so she could join the Patriots. She was wounded in battle- and then tended her own wounds, including removing a musket ball from her hip by herself- so that her identity and her choice to serve could remain her own. She told us of receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, and another, more questionable discharge from the Baptists. 🙂 We so enjoyed her visit and would surely welcome her back anytime. Many thanks to Deborah Sampson for her service. Our way of life is owed to all those who sacrificed their tomorrows in some shape or form for our todays. ***Our thanks and applause to Diann Sedam for using her talents to bring Deborah to life and to share her story with us!*** Photo Credits: Jen Eisberg
